on the left is the early 13th century great helm that I received yesterday, and on the right is the mid 14th century great helm that just came in today.

its interesting how you can see the way the great helm evolved, becoming larger to also accommodate a smaller helm that is worn underneath. after this 14th century example on the right, the great helm had become so big that it essentially transformed into the frogmouth helm which was meant almost exclusively for the jousting tournament scene.

initial thoughts about the new helm is that the 14 gauge steel on this is very confidence inspiring, especially compared to the 16 gauge steel of the early great helm on the left. I feel confident about taking a poleaxe to the head with the bigger great helm, but I probably wouldn’t take that same shot to the flat top of the 1200s era helm :broken:
