Someone, I forget who, once opined that getting tattooed is the slave voluntarily marking himself for all to see as a member of the lowest and most degraded class.

Tattoos, brands and circumcision are all methods of permanently marking slaves. Some slave minded people even voluntarily circumcise themselves. A freed slave can cover up some markings better than others.
