If they were happy with a guilty verdict then they'd be happy with another trial because they could just pled guilty and minimize the time spent.
The jury's note could be read in either direction. Interestingly, chatgpt hides any response acknowledging that.
It’s still possible in my mind that mistrial by hung jury was the desired outcome for the State. While not super likely, they could’ve put a guy in there whose sole purpose was to hang the jury. Stranger things have happened.

While I’m quite in the dark regarding the actual jury selection process in place in 21st Century Massachussettes, I am aware of a number of significant mathematical constraints implied by the stipulation “ - of one’s peers”. This whole idea made a lot more sense when a literal explicit peerage existed.
