small-time fedi trainwreck personality & long-abiding fedi development attempter. been here since 2017 and haven't accomplished a damn thing besides making friends :)

I used to work in 9-5 software engineering but found it wasn't for me, and then life took me on a ride. I'm still on that ride, and now trying to reboot as an indie developer.

@sun I got an undergrad CS degree 🤢 and my 2 semester mandatory software engineering professor and my junior year writing for CS dorks professor were both ranting eloquently about this 20 years ago

never came up with any of the rest of the faculty

does anybody know if there are other ActivityPub platform softwares with post filtering/transmogrifying facilities as capable as, or more capable than, Pleroma/Akkoma's MRF?

it counts whether it works at the instance or user level.

boosts appreciated so's I hopefully end up hearing about even obscure ones.

@zoy @csepp @joepie91 yeah, my solution for the last ~8 yrs has been to make a list of candidate devices by hardware spec, cross-ref with LineageOS downloads wiki, and pick the device which has the most maintainers / the biggest user following.

…which is why I have a Poco F1 built for India as an American user. it was great until US carriers shut down service on the few overlapping bands its radio talks to. last I checked, the radio firmware had never been cracked to overcome this in the USA.

@zoy @csepp @joepie91 FWIW I think a great deal of bang for buck can be had by providing stipends to itinerant free software autists (I say that as one myself) such that we can do more of this kind of work while living on a shoestring.

I said this recently re: better hardware support for the BSDs as well. I think a relatively small amount of cash can go far with this approach, but the cash absolutely has to be raised & distributed, or the work won't happen anywhere near as fast as it could.

@silverpill @jody_racer @mkljczk thanks, this is the second person I've heard say something like this.

I'm running a single-user Akkoma instance right now but considering whether to use it or Pleroma for a "close friends only" one. which is why I asked about Mitra moderation features like a year ago lol (I ran into many tribulations between then & now)

the more I see these well-scrubbed comfortable people with little to no precarity in their lives excitedly collaborating on ActivityPub development, the more I become concerned for the future of the network (and more importantly me and my friends' ability to use it in peace).

now my concern could absolutely be unfounded, and I hope to be pleasantly surprised, but I'll just again point out that the supposed founder of IFTAS is somebody whose bio link on that site points to LinkedIn instead of anywhere running ActivityPub, and that people broadly similar to him are increasingly taking it upon themselves to define how this place operates.

in short, I have an uncomfortable feeling that some of this work, if implemented, is going to have a rather unsurprising emergent property of reinforcing in-groups composed of people very much like themselves.
